Frugal October- Day 7

Bake in Bulk

I think storebought baked goods are too expensive and most don't taste that good.
So I pretty much bake everything at home

Saturday afternoon's   baking used 3 batches of dough mixed up in the bread machine.

almost 1/2 of it was shaped in to buns for sandwiches and breakfast toast.
1/3 of it was baked into cinannmon rolls with chopped walnuts and frosting
and the rest made 6 clover leaf rolls and 6 small hot dog buns

The bags will all go in the freezer and we will just take out however many we need for a meal.

I don't expect the cinnamon rolls will make it to the freezer,  my husband and grandson are having some already for an afternoon snack and they will be an as easy breakfast when we get ready for Church on Sunday

  1. I love baking in bulk, cooking as well but I have no room in the freezer right now after stocking up on the great sales on meat Aug and Sept. Making more room in the freezer is on my gotta do list and soon

  2. Mmm...your homemade baked goods look so good! I don't buy store-bought baked goods either. You ever read the ingredient labels on those goods?! They put so many non-essential and unhealthy ingredients in them; probably to make for a longer shelf life.

  6. Rhonda you are one resourceful woman when it comes to being thrifty and frugal. I do love to read what you are up to next and I am sorry I have not been here for a couple of weeks to check in. The baked goods you made look so yummy and you are right, the store bought ones just do not measure up to the ones we can make at home. I think they taste so much better because the one ingredient we add is not used in the store....a good dose of LOVE!

  8. Sue - this is my favorite bread recipe and it is also in a past post. To make sandwich buns, I roll it out as thin as I can and cut with a 3 or 4 inch round cutter.

ZOJIRUSHI RECIPE FOR DINNER ROLLS OR RICHER BREAD BY THE LOAF
    7/8 Cup water
    1 Large egg
3 1/4 Cups bread flour - I use 1/4 C vital wheat gluten and 3 C flour-either bread flour or all purpose gave great results~
    4 Tablespoons sugar
    3 Tablespoons dry milk
    1 teaspoon salt
1/4 Cup butter- cut in cubes
    1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
I mix this dough in my bread machine, adding the ingredients in the order listed.
Let mix and rise on dough cycle. Check the dough about midway through the kneading- it may need a little more flour.
Then, shape the dough into rolls or bread loaves.
It will make about 20 dinner rolls- this is what I used for the sausage biscuits, or 3 small loaves of bread- I like to bake them in little vintage Pyrex loaf pans.
Let the dough rise again after it has been shaped and put into well greased baking containers.
The rolls bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes, the small loaves take about 30 minutes.

  9. Yum. I bake in bulk, too! It's so nice to pull out a little something when you need it..especially on a busy day. And you're right....homemade is SO much better!

  10. Rhonda, your breads look great. I never thought about adding gluten to the mix. I have a bread maker tho and do make homemade bread. Will have to pick up some gluten on my next trip to the grocery!
