a whole chicken in a can?

Sweet Sue full cooked canned WHOLE chicken
with the bones, skin, broth, meat and all!

This can was a big topic of conversation at our home over the holidays.
Son Bobby brought it as he had heard about it from a friend of his who is a buyer for Hastings.

Of course,  my children thought it was so funny and gross but I am going to try this bird soon.
Bobby said he bought it at Crest Foods for about $5.
My mom said she knew people who have been using this whole canned chickens for a long time.  She told a story about my brother who really liked chicken and dumplings at a neighbor's house and that neighbor told Mom she used a canned chicken to make them.

Son in law John was probably the most grossed out about the idea of a whole chicken in a can,  but he pointed out the ingredient label was just "chicken, water and salt"
That is a really short list for any processed foods these days.

have any of you used a Sweet Sue canned chicken?

I will try it soon.
I do think it would be a great thing to have if you are a prepper or to have for emergencies.

  1. I am interested in hearing about it once you open it. You never know what you might find in a can!

  2. haha....I think it's just the mental image we get of a chicken being squished into a can! I've seen these at our Sam's Club. Can't wait to hear what you think about it! I'm sure it's moist and absolutely fine.

  3. Wow, never have seen that. I'll have to look at my stores around here. Sure would be convenient, huh!
Let us know if you find it and how you think it tastes. I would think it would be like canned chicken that you use like tuna? It would be great for preppers!

  4. Canned whole chickens have been around for many years...my mother used to make a chicken casserole with them...I think today she would have used rotisserie chicken.

  5. Yes for emergencies this would be great or if you had to make something and had nothing in the freezer.

  6. I think it would be great for emergencies. We have to prep for earthquakes here. We have a gas powered barbeque so that is what we would be cooking on if power went out longterm. Please post when you use it. My Mom used to home can stewed chickens for quick dinners when I was a kid. It tasted fine, would like to know how the store bought one tastes.

  7. My grandmother used this can chicken to make chicken and noodles. I was the best to eat. I use it too. Like you said a short list of ingredients and you can make up chicken and noodles any time you please. Grandmother didn't drive so had no way to get to the store but she could keep a couple cans of chicken on hand. I'm thankful and proud of the things she taught me and I'm using some of those ideas today. As times are not as easy as they were 10 years ago. Enjoy! Tastes good.

  8. I've been trying to find this product on line so that I can purchase it...no luck. Where did you/family find this? Would love to have a can or two on the shelf.
    Thanks!

    1. My son bought it at Crest Foods, a small discount chain of grocers in the Oklahoma City Metro area.
Another reader said her Sams has it.
I have not actually seen it in a store but I have not yet looked.
      Hope you can find some.

  10. Not sure about the brand, bt my parents used to keep a few canned chickens around. I am sure they tasted fine, because we ate them, and I don't remember them not being good. I woud think they taste better than the canned chicken meat that looks like cans of tuna, I think those are rather funky tasting. :)

  11. Now your children will wonder if you've used the canned chicken every time you serve them a chicken dish!!! Hahaha

I'm interested in what it's like too.

  12. When my dad and brothers went camping they had canned chicken, canned bacon and sausages to go with them. I would love to have some of the whole chickens to put on my pantry shelf!

What is the expiration date on that canned chicken? If it's like the canned hams it should be good for two or three years...

    1. Hi Terri, my can says June 2014.

Hope John finds them. The cans are big, about the size of old Hi C cans or juice cans.

  13. I just went to the Sweet Sue site and discovered that they have a 'product finder' under the products tab. Even though the whole chicken is not shown, if you click on the product finder it will show up in the drop down box.

I am pleased as punch because I found three stores within 50 miles that sell this product, one of which is in John's work town. Guess who I'm asking to run over to the grocery and grab a few? lol

  14. I saw a product like that years ago, my mil had purchased it and it was delicious! Be sure to let us know what you thought of it. It doesn't sound too bad if that's really all the ingredients that are in it.
    Have a good day, Cindy

  15. I have never even heard of this! It has me laughing though. How in the world do they fit an entire chicken in a can?!

  16. I can my own chicken - not a whole one in a can, but canned diced chicken - with water and a bit of salt. It is very tasty and convenient, plus it doesn't take up freezer space. I can corned beef and turkey too. :)
